Wayne Rooney has assured Fabio Capello he will be fit for the World Cup and could even be back before the end of the season.
Rooney, who last night won the PFA Player of the Year award, sparked an England scare after missing Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Tottenham with a groin injury.
But the United and England striker spoke with Capello’s right-hand man Franco Baldini at Old Trafford on Saturday and allayed any fears the injury would prevent him from going to South Africa.
Rooney, who has hit 34 goals this season, has endured a miserable injury-hit end to the campaign.
But now United’s medical team will be working flat-out to get him fit for their final two games of the season – away to Sunderland next Sunday and at home to Stoke on the final day of the campaign on May 9.
United assistant boss Mike Phelan said: “We have to wait and see how Wayne responds to treatment. He wasn’t fit for the last couple of days before the game so we move on.
“We’ve got seven days now to prepare for the next game and we hope to get him back. He has a groin problem and that’s possibly due to a little bit of fatigue.
“He’s had a fantastic season and these things creep up on you now and again and Wayne has suffered in the past two to three weeks.”
After picking up the PFA Player of the Year award, Rooney hailed Lionel Messi as the best in the world and admitted the Argentina and Barcelona star was in a different class to him.
“It’s nice that people put me up there but I think Messi is the best,” Rooney said.
“The things he can do with the ball are unbelievable and he’s scoring a lot of goals as well.
“He’s been fantastic again this year. He’s the best player in the world.”
